15 october 2023

In a stunning upset, Afghanistan defeated defending champions England by 69 runs in the 13th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

Put in to bat first, Afghanistan got off to a flying start thanks to a blistering 80 from Rahmanullah Gurbaz. He was well supported by Ibrahim Zadran (54) as the pair put on a 133-run opening partnership.

After Gurbaz's dismissal, Afghanistan lost a few quick wickets, but Ikram Alikhil (58) and Rashid Khan (23) played some valuable cameos to help their side post a competitive total of 284 all out.

England's chase got off to a shaky start as they lost their top three batsmen inside the first 10 overs. Joe Root (34) tried to hold the innings together, but he was eventually dismissed by Rashid Khan.

The rest of the England batting lineup crumbled under pressure, and they were eventually bowled out for 215 runs in the 43rd over.

Rashid Khan was the star of the show for Afghanistan with the ball, taking three wickets for 42 runs.

Afghanistan's victory is a historic one, as it is their first ever win against England in a World Cup match.

It is also a testament to the progress that Afghanistan cricket has made in recent years.
