Apple gave us a sneak peek of iOS 17, the next iPhone operating system, at this year’s WWDC event. While iOS 17 has some small updates, it also has five exciting new features you should check out
1. StandBy Mode
In the upcoming iOS 17, your iPhone is getting a cool new feature called StandBy mode. It’s like turning your iPhone into a smart display when you connect it to a charger and lay it flat. Think of it as having a bedside clock on your iPhone, just like the one on your Apple Watch.
With this mode, you can see the time, set alarms, check your calendar, control your media, and even keep an eye on any ongoing Live Activity. It’s especially handy if you have one of those MagSafe iPhone mounts on your desk or nightstand. But keep in mind, it might not be everyone’s cup of tea.
2. Contact Posters

3. iMessage app drawer

In the past, Apple had a slider above the message box in iMessage where all your iMessage apps were kept separate from the Photos app because people used Photos more often. But in iOS 17, all your iMessage apps will now be in one place within iMessage. When you update, one of the first things you’ll want to do is customize this new app area in iMessage to make it work best for you.
4. NameDrop
We’ve had a chance to explore iOS 17 features for a bit, thanks to public and developer testing. But some features really come alive when iOS 17 rolls out worldwide. One cool thing is NameDrop, a new way to easily share your contact info. It’s built on the foundation of Contact Posters and AirDrop, so you’ll need to create your Contact Poster first.
Once everything’s set up, all you have to do is put your iPhone close to someone else’s to share your Contact Poster and other info. You can also choose which phone numbers or email addresses you want to share, which is a nice feature. If you’re used to carrying business cards or sharing digital links, this could change the way you network.
5. SharePlay
iOS 17 carries energizing changes to SharePlay, an element that is getting a major redesign in this new update. Before, it was a piece convoluted to begin a SharePlay meeting. You needed to utilize iMessage or FaceTime, which worked fine when you were far away from the individual you needed to impart to, yet it was a problem when they were right close to you.
However, with iOS 17, things are a lot easier. Beginning a SharePlay meeting is pretty much as simple as putting your iPhone near your companion’s iPhone, and you can in a split second partake in media together.
