It was a special day at the Arun Jaitley Stadium when Indian captain Rohit Sharma made history in the ODI World Cup. His brilliant century against Afghanistan not only marked a personal achievement but also made him the leading century-scorer in ODI World Cups, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record of six centuries. With seven centuries, Sharma now holds the record.
Rohit Sharma played his first World Cup in 2015, scoring a century. In the next four years, during the 2019 World Cup in England, he added five more centuries. Now, in 2023, he has broken Tendulkar’s 12-year-old record by achieving a century against Afghanistan in just the 19th match of the World Cup. Tendulkar’s six centuries came in 45 matches across six World Cups from 1992 to 2011.

Sharma completed his century in an incredible 63 balls, making him the fastest century-scorer for India in an ODI World Cup. This broke Kapil Dev’s previous record of 72 balls against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup. Virender Sehwag is next on the list with an 81-ball century against Bermuda in 2007.
Rohit Sharma also made a big record in the match against Afghanistan. He became the batsman with the most sixes in international cricket, surpassing Chris Gayle’s previous record. Before this match, Sharma needed three sixes to break Gayle’s record of 553 sixes in 551 innings across 483 international matches. Sharma achieved this in his 473rd inning, spanning 453 international matches.
