Bishan Singh Bedi, a former captain of the Indian cricket team and one of the most celebrated spin bowlers in the national squad, passed away on October 23 at the age of 77.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a statement to confirm Bedi’s demise and extend their condolences. The BCCI expressed, “BCCI mourns the sad loss of former India Test Captain and legendary spinner, Bishan Singh Bedi. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and fans during these challenging times. May his soul find eternal peace.”

This iconic Indian spinner participated in 67 Test matches between 1967 and 1979, amassing an impressive total of 266 wickets. At the time of his retirement, he held the distinction of being India’s top wicket-taker in Test cricket.

Bedi also played in 10 One-Day International (ODI) matches, where he took seven wickets. He played a crucial role in the team’s first-ever ODI win during the 1975 World Cup, where he put up a remarkable performance, with a bowling figure of 12 overs, 8 runs, 6 maiden overs, and 1 wicket against East Africa.

Born in Amritsar, Bedi’s journey in cricket began at a young age, eventually leading him to represent Delhi in first-class cricket. He distinguished himself as one of the leading wicket-takers in the realm of first-class cricket, accumulating an impressive total of 1,560 wickets in 370 matches.

During his captaincy, the Delhi team achieved remarkable victories, clinching the prestigious Ranji Trophy titles in the 1978-79 and 1979-80 seasons.

The news of Bedi’s passing has deeply saddened the cricketing world. Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur expressed his condolences, calling it a “loss for the entire cricket world.” He described Bedi as a former Indian team captain and a bowler of international acclaim.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute, stating that he was “deeply saddened” by the demise of the cricketing legend. He lauded Bedi as a master of crafty bowling, capable of weaving magic on the pitch. Shah extended heartfelt condolences to Bedi’s family and fans during this somber moment.
